The old A&P? It seemed HUGE back when I was a kid.

Post about other things that are long gone.

1. The 1917 Galion High School Building (GHS) as well as almost all of the other buildings (associated with same) in that block.
2. North Elementary School
3. Dawsett Elementary School
4. Renschville Elementary School
5. Wilma Crall (South) Elementary School
6. St. Mark United Methodist Church (on Portland Way North)
7. Etc.
Yes, I went to South School before it became Wilma Crall. I also, remember Wilma Crall. She was a great lady. I think most kids that went to the school would remember her. I often sit and say all the teachers from one hallway to the other.
Let me see how many I can name: Mrs. Gordan, Mrs. Yow, Miss Martin, Miss Dodd, Mrs. Garlow, Miss Findley, Mrs,. Shaffer, Mrs. Harriger, Mr. Beltz, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Braden. I think I got them except for one room. Oh my land that has been a long time ago.
OK, Rita -- you got me thinking about whether I could do the same for North!

During my time there, from east to west on the first floor (which would be K through 5), there were: Ms. Voelm, Ms. Ellis, Mrs Herold, Mrs. Henkel, Miss Newmann -- and I am blank on the 4th grade teachers, as I spent that year living in Virginia. Downstairs were Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Kersh and the first generation of MAPP -- Mr. Casey, Mr. Kent and Mr. Bach.

During my tenure there, the principals were Mr. Yochem and Mr. Bell.
How about the Woolworth 5 and 10 cent store on the square? Remember the food counter?
yes, had many lunches there with mom when she worked at A & P. Walking distance to woolsworth. I also remember Jorge's that was in the back section of the woolsworth after they closed.
How about Toni's bakery. All those sweet pastries. Always loved getting sweet treats there.
I left Galion in 1988 and have lived in three southeastern US. I've only found one other bakery that makes glazed donuts as good as Toni's.
I worked there during high school from the age of 15. Donuts were good, but his egg bread was THE BEST! I have never eaten butter flake rolls like his either. The ovens in the back were huge as was his heart! He was without a doubt the best boss a kid could have. I remember riding my bicycle to work from our home on St. Rte. 19 west of town- about 3 miles. In the summer I would change into a dress after getting to work. Can you imagine working in a dress today? I could write a short book about our (Margie Frye's) and my experiences there.Mary Deppen Court
You guys realize Tony is a starter out at Valley View golf course...man he loves to tell stories about the bakery. That guy is a riot to be around and to golf with.
What about J & H Shoes on the square and the H & K drug store on the corner of Jefferson and Harding Way?
We got all of our shoes from J & H! H & K had the best candy section!
Yes, we always got shoes and J& H. In fact when I took mom and dad to a health clinic I ran into Howard and his wife. Had a nice conversation with them.
