Foolish question, I know.

Sure would have been a great two weeks for kids to get away from the idiot box and video games to go outside and get some fresh air.

Can't recall a period when the temps have been belowing freezing for such an extended period of time.

Maybe it'll be ready by Easter.

Clark's words at city council says no.

What ever happened to just floooding the tennis courts with a couple of inches of water and letting it freeze ?

Worked great for decades.

Let's try and fix what is not broken, that usually works well.

Anthony.. we are not trying to fix what is not broken just trying very hard to get a good place for the kids to skate and yes if we can use the old tennis court I am all for it , So many people complain but you never see these people wanted to get our and help fix things.. I have tried very hard for the past 3years to get our parks and rec areas in good shape for the kids and I am sorry the rink at East Park will not freeze wish I could make it freeze but I cannot control the weather if you have any good Ideas I would love to hear them...

Shirley for decades the tennis courts were flooded with an inch or two of water and used with from what I can recall no problems.

Back in the day city workers opened up a hydrant with a hose and directed the water onto the courts. I understand what you're trying to do, and believe me I kick my kids outside all the time to play. Trying to freeze feet of water takes below zero temps for days on end, trying to freeze and inch or two can happen in a matter of days.

Basic rule of thumb.

In order to freeze two inches into solid ice

0 degrees F for 2 days

15 degrees F for 3 - 5 days

30 degrees F for 5 - 7 days

The courts since they are directly on the ground, will freeze extremely fast, if you are going feet underground, the ground will hold heat. The farther you go under ground, the warmer it is and will remain.

I do not know what the frost line is in Galion, as it varies through out the state. Anything below that is unlikely to freeze which is causing you so much grief.

I am all for flooding the tennis courts and Gene Toy and I have already talked about it and I hope we can get it done soon so the kids can use the skates the citizens of Galion have donated if you can offer any help please contact me

Okay.

The courts at Heise or somewhere else ?

From what I recall, no tax money was used. The funds came from the Freese Foundation.

I believe Shirley got some bad advice regarding the feasibility.

It happens.

Rectify the situation and move on.

Did the city spend money to do this at the park?

The ice rink is a superb idea, and one which, as a taxpayer, I don't mind supporting. Galion's parks and recreational opportunities are not only a key part of the quality of life here, but also part of economic development. I also think that its important to continue to invest in East, South and Cobey Parks, in addition to Heise. The schools used to be anchors in those neighborhoods, but now that they're gone, the parks serve that role.

I think that the ice rink would possibly work if some sort of cover could be used to keep snow off the area.

In any case, Shirley Clark is clearly driven by her love for the community and its children. She's doing a fantastic job.
