St.Joseph's

Saint Joseph's steeple was used as a test site for the fire department: they would practice pumping streams of water over the structure. The structure was bobbed in later years.

Recent Eden Pure Offer

I am normally a skeptic, but an offer was recently received through the mail, which was carefully crafted to reach me as a Patriotic, penny pinching senior. The offer began by telling me that I was "one of a select few in my area" to receive a voucher for roughly half off on an Eden Pure Heater (a limited time offer that had to be acted upon immediately). The pitch continued by stating that jobs were returning to Ohio as the units were now being assembled here, & that the shipping/handling…See More

Park Concerts

A loyal core of Galion residents gather weekly in order to experience the wealth of area talent via the Summer Concert Series: their ranks were swelled considerably Tuesday night as friends & musical peers, of the featured Gatlin show, converged on Heise Park. The resultant crowd of around 500, created an atmosphere typical of a family reunion: those present were stunned by the impact of a finely tuned national act. An excellent sound & lighting system enhanced obvious talent, who…See More

Lauretta Schimmoler,an unbelieveable bundle of energy.

Saw an article about another interesting Galion resident, Lauretta Schimmoler. She was born at Fort Jennings Ohio in 1900,& lived near Bucyrus. She graduated from Bliss College in Columbus, & served as a court stenographer for the county, & later as a public stenographer. Lauretta worked part time at a hatchery, & later specialized in Leghorn chickens (with her own business, Riverview Leghorn Farm). The prize winning chickens were used by the Pennsylvania dining car system.…See More

Sunday's return to the past

I wish to extend sincere thanks to the many folks, who allowed us  to return to an earlier time Sunday, when Galion exemplified excellence. Community pride was the result of the efforts of skilled artisans with loving hearts, & a city that was quite aware of what it had; willing to flaunt its success to the World. Galion extended its influence into every field of endeavor: education, religion, music, art, sports, career military, medicine, industry & social work. The talent of its…See More

Heise Park Pool

I saw a post earlier today on Facebook regarding the Heise Park pool. I checked my archives, then spent an hour trying to find the post in order to respond, without success. Anyhow, here's the information I had on hand.

Fred Lonius donated $ 10.00 in July of 1921 towards a community pool: he was joined immediately by Clare Dice, H.W. Bradley & A.M. Metheany who each contributed matching funds for the worthy project. The Inquirer had suggested such a project & offered to…

School Board Announces Installation of Solar Panels: March 20, 1985

Galion School appropriations topped $ 10 million for the first time in 1985, when State Lottery funds joined cash made available by local voters, who had graciously passed a 5 year, 2.6 mill levy in 1983. Architect Marty Bricker stated that the drawings were complete, & that bids would open April 19th., for the installation of an innovative heating/cooling system on the south side of the main wing of Dawsett school. Citizens were assured that the system expense would be recouped through… Continue

Margaret Mae Moller was Harry's daughter by his first wife (which makes her my mother's half sister). Her mother died of a brain tumor when she was 10. I was aware that she had performed with her father when she was a child; she was no longer performing by the time Harry married my grandmother (May 1925). I've never heard anything about her being in a movie. In addition to performing in vaudeville, Harry managed movie theaters, so maybe this is a reference to her having appeared at movie theaters (there was often live entertainment between the films). I met Margaret only once, in 1986 or 1987; she died in 2005. She was married to Kenneth Atha and lived mainly in Michigan and Florida. Thanks for posting the photo; would it be possible to scan the entire article?

I would love to see some old classmate pictures. It is good to finally connect with someone from Galion that was in my class. I sang in the choir in both Junior and Senior High. We did sound of music one year at the Junior High. I took some accounting at Parkland College here. I didn't go into that field though. I took some bookkeeping classes in High School.

Jan and I grew up together. He married my cousin Sandra Tennant. Small world. Do they still live on Church Street in Galion where Jan grew up or did they move? He lived and grew up on Church Street in a big white house. I haven't talked to Jan and Sandra in some time. Do they have a web site or internet address? What did you major in at OSU? I work at the University of Illinois in Urbana Illinois.

Where did you go to grade school John? I think we may have gone to school together. Does the names Jan Meek, Sandra Stinehelfer, Diane Sinclair, Martin Meeker, Ed Cass, Lawrence Triesch, just to name a few classmates sound familiar to you? I rember about the ghosts and the MS you are talking about. We lived on Primrose Street, moved to South Street and when we left lived on Atwood Street in Galion. I still have cousins living in Galion.

No John I didn't work in the cafeteria but I attended High School there in the 60's. Do you remember when they dug up the side yard to add the new addition on the old school and found a grave yard? It was quite the conversation in Galion. I would have graduate in 1967. We moved away before that time. We left Galion in 1966. I grew up in Galion and went to East School, Galion Jr. HIgh on Boston Street and of course good old Galion Sr. High. GO TIGERS!

Just viewed latest photos--wow, what a collection you have!
One obvious thing about cats in general is that they all fancy themselves kings and queens ( that would explain refusing even cat "treats" at times, like mine do) They always want you to know who they think is really in charge.
It appears you were down at OSU in the same time frame I was. Did you have to stay in the towers your first year or two? I was there( Morrill) in 1968 . I was able to room over in Patterson Hall on South Campus the next year due to acquaintance with a girl from Cleveland that I met at orientation in the summer of 1968. We kept in touch our freshman year and she unvited me to room with her the next year. Somehow she was able to be a dorm floor supervisor (as a student) so I was able to get out of the towers..

My old desktop still has windows 95 & the laptop has Vista. My XP desktop died & my XP laptop needs a bios battery. Windows 95 doesn't have a USB port, & the Vista laptop doesn't have a floppy. The various Word programs don't get along, & I miss my XP laptop because it converted the Windows 95 floppy files to the updated Word programs on the Zip drive. In short, I've got a mess transferring data. I'll try to get the files back on Facebook. I haven't seen any "Friend" request from you on Facebook yet. Life's sure got its problems!
